Reflecting on Happiness, Peace and Materialism.
Monday Aug 24, 2020
Monday Aug 24, 2020
Hey monkiis,
I had some thoughts pop into my mind over the weekend that I wanted to share with the monkii family. Essentially, we just moved into a new house and as awesome as it is...it is not as satisfying nor does it elicit the same level of peace as my bigger physical adventures. Let me also be clear, I'm very VERY grateful for what we have and I want to make sure this is understood. However, I have noticed more and more in the last ~5 years that material things actually bring me less "happiness" and satisfaction. The more life experience I get under my belt the more I realize what is important and for me, it's the following: 1) family, 2) friends, 3) health, and 4) adventure. These are the things that mean the most to me and lead me to feel peaceful and purposeful. Interestingly, you cannot buy any of these. Instead, they must be earned and respected if you want them to stick around.

Micro-Misogi Part 2: Trip Report and My Evolving Attitude for Goal Setting
Tuesday Aug 18, 2020
Tuesday Aug 18, 2020
Hey monkiis,
This is essentially a part 2 episode of the 'Micro-Misogi' episode (#56) from last week. I went back up to the Diamond on Longs Peak and had an epic adventure. However, it wasn't the adventure that I found remarkable, but rather it was my evolving attitude towards setting goals. I hope you enjoy my thoughts and reflections.

Micro-Misogi: The Diamond on Longs Peak
Thursday Aug 13, 2020
Thursday Aug 13, 2020
Hey monkiis,
On this episode I talk about a little 'Micro-Misogi' that went down for me this past Friday. I climbed a route on the Diamond which is a ~1,000 foot vertical wall on the east face of Longs Peak. It was really challenging me me and definitely pushed me beyond my limits. However, it was also very eye-opening and open my imagination to what might be possible. This is exactly what the Misogi is for! Please enjoy.

Coach Michael Hill - Georgetown University Director of Sports Performance
Tuesday May 12, 2020
Tuesday May 12, 2020
Hey monkiis,
It was an honor to sit down with my former college coach - Coach Michael Hill (@license_2_hill) - from Georgetown University. He is first and foremost a Wildman, but also a modern day strength and conditioning renaissance man. Not only that, but he has been named one of the TOP 4 collegiate strength coaches in the country. In other words, he's legit. Check out his bio below and please enjoy the conversation.
Michael Hill, a native of Fort Dodge, Iowa, has been with the Georgetown University athletics department since 2004 and is currently the director of sports performance working specifically with men’s basketball while overseeing the development of all 29 sports.
Most recently in 2018, Hill became a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certification board member. He is also a board member for Body Mechanix Fitness Cooperative in San Francisco, a consultant for SiSu Systems in Washington, D.C., a consultant for Go Pro Workout in Nashua, New Hampshire, an advisor for Monkii Bars in Boulder, Colorado, and an advisor for Perch Fitness in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In May 2017 Hill was recognized as a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach (MSCC) by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa), which is the highest honor a strength coach can achieve. In 2014 the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) named Hill one of the top four collegiate strength and conditioning coaches in the country.
He had previously worked in California as a Fitness Manager at 24 Fitness before moving to the Washington metropolitan area, where he has also worked with Episcopal High School in Virginia, Potomac High School in Virginia, and The Catholic University of America in the District.
Hill’s certifications and memberships include the CSCCa-MSCC, NSCA-RSCC, National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), 24 Hour Fitness CPT, APEX, SAC Level 1, and CPR/AED from the American Red Cross.
Hill has a Bachelor of Arts in health promotions and a minor in coaching from the University of Northern Iowa while also holding a master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies.

Derek Sivers - How To Live
Sunday Apr 26, 2020
Sunday Apr 26, 2020
monkiis,
This was a dream conversation for me to have with none other than the Wildman - Derek Sivers. I was first introduced to Derek and his story way back in 2011 during my first failed attempt to start a business. His approach to both business and life struck a perfect chord with me and I have been incorporating many of his philosophies into both my personal and business life ever since (which for me are basically one and the same).
Derek is the founder of CD Baby which he sold in 2008 for $22 million. For him it was never about the money and to literally 'put his money where his mouth is' he donated the money from the sale of CD Baby to a charitable trust for music education.
Derek has been a musician, producer, circus performer, entrepreneur, TED speaker, and book publisher.
I highly encourage all monkiis to listen to my favorite podcast episode with Derek on the Tim Ferriss Show. It's also worth your time to check out Derek's website. His Book Notes section of his website is a treasure trove of knowledge.
What I appreciate most about Derek is his deeply examined life and embracement of the notion that "the opposite may also be true". You may not agree with everything he says, but this is a good thing as it helps you understand your own beliefs better.
Derek's books:
Available now:
- Anything You Want (2011) 40 lessons for a new kind of entrepreneur: my tales of starting, building, and selling CD Baby
Coming soon:
- Your Music and People (2019) a philosophy for musicians (and normal people) of getting your work to the world by being creative, considerate, resourceful, descriptive, focused, and connected.
- Hell Yeah or No (2019) a collection of thoughts around re-defining yourself, changing focus, and saying yes to less.
- How to Live (2020) radically different approaches to life, in succinct directives.
Derek's notes on, The Courage to be Disliked.

Mason Gravley: Reflecting on COVID-19 and Lessons Learned from Adventure
Thursday Mar 26, 2020
Thursday Mar 26, 2020
Hey monkiis,
I'm psyched to have my good friend Mason Gravley back on the show. Mason is the host on the Adventure Sports podcast and all-around Wildman. He has done epic adventures all over the country by bike and foot. He is also an extremely deep thinker and I really value his insights and perspectives. I think you will too.
Show notes:
-Misogi Interview with travel writer Aaron Millar.
-Mason interviews monkii Dan on the Adventure Sports podcast.
I'd also HIGHLY recommend Athletic Brewing Non-Alcoholic Beer. Mason is the Lead Adventurer for Athletic Brewing and also hosts another podcast for them. I was definitely skeptical of non-alcoholic beer until I tried Athletic Brewing. It's delicious.

Hey monkiis,
I finally got to record a conversation with my good friend Erl -Wildman of the North. We met several years back and he is an OG monkii to the core.
Erl is a psychologist residing in Lofoten, Norway which lies above the Arctic Circle. What I've always appreciated about him is that he specifically moved to this Wild environment to seek out more adventure. Our kind of monkii. We take a journey through the topics and there are some gems to be found for sure. Please enjoy!

Keep Calm and monkii on - Thoughts on 'The Virus'
Monday Mar 16, 2020
Monday Mar 16, 2020
Hey monkiis,
We are going through some wild times indeed... I wanted to share a few thoughts and observations as the Coronavirus starts to hit home here in the USA. First and foremost, I think that this is a situation to be taken seriously and not brush off as 'it's no big deal'. People are dying and a lot more could. However, I believe that if we WORK TOGETHER, make good decisions, and keep calm, this too shall pass. I have seen an overwhelmingly positive response from the monkii family. Many monkiis are training while working from home and a lot of younger monkiis (ie kids home from school) are joining them as well. My wife, daughter and I went for a hike yesterday afternoon and everyone was friendly and seemed to even be more grounded as times like these can remind us of what is most important.
There is a lot that is out of our individual control. The best thing you can do is focus your time and energy and what you can control and not get caught up in what could easily turn to mass hysteria. Preparedness is a good thing, but don't take it to the extreme. Your neighbor needs toilet paper, medical supplies, and food as much as you do. Be smart, but also be reasonable.
We are here if you need us. Let's push forward together.
Thanks for tuning in and if you are enjoying the episodes we would be eternally grateful if you could leave a 5-star review. It helps to grow the monkii family and spread the good word of the Wild. Thank you.

monkii Kim's Question - Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness aka DOMS. The Good and the Bad.
Wednesday Mar 04, 2020
Wednesday Mar 04, 2020
Hey monkiis,
This episode was inspired by none other than the 100% Wild monkii Kim. She actually asked 3 questions all related to DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). Here's what she asked:
This question has come up for me many times over the years. I'm a bit of a workout masochist. I enjoy DOMS the next day because it makes me feel like I accomplished something, that my workout was challenging enough. Is DOMS proof of anything? Is a workout less effective if you don't feel it the next day? Is it unhealthy to workout to the point you experience DOMS on a regular basis? I tend to feel like I did something wrong if I can't feel anything the next day.
I'm talking a more basic soreness that lasts a day or so. Not the type where you wonder if it's worth investing in a stair chair because it hurts too much to walk and takes a week to recover from it, heh.
Great question! We respect your long-standing dedication to Wildness and pushing your boundaries.
