Strong First with the Colorado Wildman - Sean Sewell
Tuesday Nov 24, 2020
Tuesday Nov 24, 2020
Hey monkiis,
It was a great time getting to connect with my Colorado monkii brother Sean Sewell. Sean is the host of the Engearment Podcast, runs a gear review website - Engearment.com, is a strength and conditioning coach, and is also a full-blooded monkii and mountain man. We've spent some solid hours in the Wild together and we always have a great conversation when it comes to training, fitness, health, and wellness. What I always appreciate about talking with him is his genuine curiosity and open-mindedness. He is a life-long learner and always gets me psyched to dig a little deeper. You can follow Sean on IG @coloradopersonalfitness and @engearment. Please enjoy the conversation!

What is Your Mission Statement with monkii Rich Mulholland
Monday Nov 23, 2020
Monday Nov 23, 2020
Hey monkiis,
This was a super fun and Wild episode with my Wild monkii brother from South Africa Rich Mulholland (@richmulholland). Rich is first and foremost a Wildman embodying the monkii way of life. He's also been a super successful entrepreneur, author, and speaker. His company Missing Link has helped speakers and companies from across the globe communicate more effectively. Since communication is how we get shit done, I'd say this is a pretty important aspect to improve upon whether it be for business or in your personal life.
We went on a journey in this episode. We sort of interviewed each other back and forth and there are a ton of knowledge bombs dropped throughout. We start by discussing the latest Kickstarter from us monkiis for Stoic, we talk training, we talk about having a family mission, we talk Chess, we discuss our reading list, we talk how COVID was an opportunity for Rich to make his business better and much much more.
It was a pleasure catching up with monkii Rich and I'm stoked to continue the conversation!

Quanitifying the Minimalist Approach to monkii Training (follow up episode)
Thursday Nov 19, 2020
Thursday Nov 19, 2020
Hey monkiis,
I've been thinking about the last episode (#65 - Minimalist Approach to Health Gains) and wanted to do a follow-up episode to add more actionable context. Determining if you are reaching your 'threshold of adaptation' isn't always super easy to figure out and I came up with three strategies that may help.
1. How sore are you after training? Ideally, you aren't sore, or, at most you just kind of 'feel it'. Not that being sore is universally bad, but your goal should not be to be sore every time you train.
2. Are you improving? Or, are you at least not losing fitness? This needs to be measured more in weeks/months than days, but the point is, if you aren't seeing improvement over the long run, you might need to reevaluate your approach.
3. What is your desire to train? What are your energy levels? I heard the 'desire to train' from Kelly Starrett as well as other elite athletes that have shared a similar concept. Most of the time, you should feel psyched to train and to move. On days where this lacks, you can still train, you just need to make sure the intensity level is congruent with your current state.

Minimalist Approach to Health Gains
Wednesday Nov 18, 2020
Wednesday Nov 18, 2020
Hey monkiis,
A big thanks to the Wildman of the North, @erlendhunstad for the question. He asked, "What are your thoughts on a minimalist approach to health gains? What can be the least you can do and still get a positive change?". Great question! The number one thing to keep in mind is that to achieve results from your training all you need to do is cross your 'threshold of adaptation'. What is also very important to consider is that once you have crossed this threshold, doing extra volume will not produce extra gains. I suspect that many people, especially those new to training may be going so far beyond their individual threshold that they are actually stunting potential gains. I know I am guilty of this and have taken a big step back to analyze my training and adjust it for the better. Above all else, consistency with training is absolutely the most important factor.
I mentioned a video of me working out in the Wild, check it out! monkii Dan training in the Wild.

Training Update - November 13th, 2020
Friday Nov 13, 2020
Friday Nov 13, 2020
Hey monkiis,
I've been diligently keeping a training journal since October 19th, 2020. It's been useful for a few reasons. 1) I can easily look back at what I have been doing to help decide what to do today, 2) I can see biases towards and certain exercise or movement, 3) I think about training more so I train more. The third reason might actually be the most important. I've become mildly obsessed with tracking my training and because of that, I'm actually training more. I'm playing with this idea of working out all day and the tracking serves as a useful reminder to take a break when I am stuck pounding keys.
One thing I realized when recording this podcast was that I need to start adding time-stamps to the training journal. I'm very curious to see how everything times out during the day.
Do you keep a training journal? If so, I'd be psyched to hear your strategy, format, etc.

monkii Questions: FOMO, Training, and Fatherhood from monkii Erl
Wednesday Nov 11, 2020
Wednesday Nov 11, 2020
Hey monkiis,
I need to start with a shoutout the the Wildman of the North @erlendhunstad for sending some great questions my way. This was just one of many.
monkii Erl writes, "What are the monkii Elders thoughts on FOMO in training. I felt after fatherhood I really changed the game. I used to do a lot, probably overtrained because of the fear of losing my gainz. I now have less opportunity and choice and I reflect more on these training choices more often".
This is a great question and topic to bring up and I know there are many monkii Dads/Moms out there, myself included. The biggest shift more me was my mindset. I had to accept that my training needed to change versus trying to shove what I had always done into my new life situation. Now, I basically 'train all day' with microworkouts that fit much better into the rhythm of the day.
We definitely need to circle back on this topic. Please enjoy.

Mark Bell on Stoicism, Philosophy, and Being Wildly Strong
Monday Nov 02, 2020
Monday Nov 02, 2020
Hey monkiis,
I am super psyched to have on the Strongest Wildman known to monkiis, Mark Bell (@marksmellybell). Mark has set both World and American records in powerlifting. These include a 1,080lb squat, an 854lb bench press, and a 766lb deadlift, and a best raw bench press in competition of 578lbs. Mark is the inventor and founder of the SlingShot (www.markbellslingshot.com) which has turned him into the "MeatHead Millionaire". Mark is also the owner of the Super Training Gym, a 100% free powerlifting gym that has produced some of the strongest athletes known to man or monkii. Mark is the host of "Mark Bell's Power Project Podcast" which is what inspired me to reach out to him in the first place.
We cover a ton of topics ranging from stoicism, philosophy, mindest, and of course, we talk some training as well. I appreciate Mark taking the time to chat with a monkii like me and I hope you get something from our conversation.

Stoic - The Natural Standing Mat
Friday Sep 18, 2020
Friday Sep 18, 2020
Hey monkiis,
I am stoked on Stoic! Stoic launches on Kickstarter at 10am EST on 9/22/2020. Be there early to take advantage of the special SOCIETY ONLY Kickstarter pricing (only 2,000 Society rewards available).
CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE STOIC KICKSTARTER PAGE.
Stoic is what your body has been craving and I use it every day to stand on while I work at monkii HQ. #1 it feels REALLY GOOD to stand on. The floor here is smooth, hard concrete which couldn't be anymore unnatural. The way Stoic engages more muscles and creates more movement has virtually eliminated all my standing pain. In addition, I have a whole new level of energy when the workday is over and I head out on the trails or get into a solid monkii session. I've also noticed that my feet feel stronger and I recover way faster after crushing miles in the mountains.
With exercise, but also in life, I believe that variety is extremely important. Stoic has over 50 setup options with a ton more on the way. This allows you to regularly vary the standing surface as well as to level up to more challenging standing environments.
If you do any sort of prolonged standing, or, if you have been sitting and want to transition to a standing work setup, I highly recommend you get Stoic.
Thanks for tuning in and monkii on!

Resistance and Finding the One Thing - Your Trigger Point for Action
Monday Aug 31, 2020
Monday Aug 31, 2020
Hey monkiis,
In this episode, I share some thoughts and fighting 'resistance' and finding the 'one thing' that sets you into motion. This is something that I had done somewhat intuitively over the years - especially in regard to physical training - and recently had the concept reinforced in the book Atomic Habits. This one thing or the trigger point is the single action that you take that sets into motion the cascade of events that lead you to do what you want to do. It's super simple and highly effective.
Also referenced is Steven Pressfield's The War of Art and Do the Work. These are highly recommended reads for all monkiis.

Hey monkiis,
Welcome to another Quick Episode of the podcast. I wanted to get out some thoughts and observations I've had over the past few months about my own behavior. Mainly, I've had some good reminders recently of the power of momentum as it applies to pretty much anything you do. Have a listen.
