Learning from monkiis - How Julie and Brice Arnot Lost 30 pounds and Changed Their Lives
Wednesday Feb 17, 2021
Wednesday Feb 17, 2021
Hey monkiis,
In this episode, I'd like to welcome the Colorado monkiis Julie and Brice Arnot. Julie was kind enough to send a note on December 8, 2020 that really helped me to reorient myself and remember the 'why' behind monkii. She wrote,
"Since May we have both lost about 30lbs. With monkii, yoga, boxing, running, walking and playing sports. We love having something at home to do our workouts! Thanks again for your great workouts and equipment. My hubby lost 30lbs and I have lost 38lbs and we're still going strong. Just wanted to thank you for helping us start our lifelong journey to health."
What struck me about Julie's note was that they were not just doing some crash diet or chasing the latest fad, but instead were making a conscious effort to change their lives and adopt a totally different lifestyle. It also wasn't just about losing the weight, but instead, they were focused on becoming healthier, fitter, and I would also add wilder.
I really enjoyed talking with them and getting to know them and I believe that there is a ton to learn from their journey. Maybe you take some ideas as use them as your own. Or, maybe you have a friend that needs some simple steps to just get started.
If you have questions, comments, or a potential guest suggestion please send a note to Elders@monkii.co or send us a DM to @monkii.co on Instagram. Let's keep the conversation going.
Thanks for tuning in and if you are enjoying the episodes we would be eternally grateful if you could leave a 5-star review. It helps to grow the monkii family and spread the good word of the Wild. Thank you.
See you out there and monkii on,

Ash Dykes - Setting World Records, Training for Adventure, and Living Wild.
Monday Feb 15, 2021
Monday Feb 15, 2021
Hey monkiis,
I am psyched to welcome 3x world-first record holder and all-around Wildman Ash Dykes (@ash_dykes) to the show.
Ash is a Welsch adventurer and explorer who has 3 world-first records. These include trekking across Mongolia and Madagascar, each of which he did before the age of 25. In August 2019, he achieved his third official record, becoming the first person to walk along the full 4,000-mile (6,437km) course of the Yangtze, the longest river in Asia. What blew my mind was that even before these record-setting expeditions, he was out there being Wild like it was his job. Check out what else he's done below.
- Cycling Cambodia & Vietnam (1130 miles) in 15 days on £10 bikes.
- Trekking the Himalayas in North India.
- Cycling a part of Australia (700 miles) in 13 days.
- Learned how to survive in the jungle with a Burmese Hill Tribe.
- Cycled the length of Britain (985 miles) in 7days for charity.
- Walked 200 miles across Wales in the dead of winter.
- Trekked alone through the Alps during winter just missing a landslide.
- Worked as a scuba diving instructor for two years in Thailand.
- Competed against the locals in the martial art of Muay Thai.
I first heard Ash on Joe Rogan's podcast and he just oozed this enthusiasm for adventure and has lived almost half his life in what we in monkii culture would call Misogi - he is constantly expanding his imagination and testing himself to see what is possible. For all his accomplishments he remains grounded, he remains humble, and when hearing him speak you understand that for him it is all about the journey. I also really respect how he is giving back to some of the communities he has visited. He is an Ambassador of Malaria No More UK, an organization working to eradicate malaria within our lifetime.
Spoiler alert, but Ash did contract malaria himself and I can see why he has a special interest in helping fight the disease.
Ash has written a book called Mission Possible and there is a documentary that follows his expedition trekking across Mongolia and another one on the way that captures his epic adventure along the Yangtze.
Show notes:
You can find Ash on his website, www.Ashdykes.com.
Ash is on Instagram @ash_dykes.
He has a rad YouTube channel.

I had a wild time talking with Ash and I’m stoked to follow the journey ahead.

Bodyweight Training - Can You Get Jacked?
Tuesday Feb 09, 2021
Tuesday Feb 09, 2021
Hey monkiis,
This is a follow up to the previous episode #85. I was thinking about it and I never really addressed fully the question of, "can you build your body with bodyweight training exclusively?". The answer my monkii-friends is, HELL-YEAH!
Tune in and hear the reasons why.
Also, if you don't believe me check out a few folks using bodyweight training.

monkii Q&A: monkii Dan's Training History
Friday Feb 05, 2021
Friday Feb 05, 2021
Hey monkiis,
This episode was inspired by a question from monkii Ernesto in The monkii Wild Facebook Group. He asks,
"I do have to ask monkii Dan did you really build your body primarily through bodyweight training? If not what fitness program did you use and what do you practice currently? I know you mentioned being a Wildman firefighter and wilderness ranger, is this where you developed your body? For myself, my goals are to be strong and functional first and foremost but a good-looking body is a plus!"
Reflecting back on my training history I have essentially 25 years of focused, intentional training. The 'results' did not happen overnight and are always in a state of flux. If you aren't consistent, it's just as easy to see reverse progress. The number 1 lesson I've learned is that consistency in training supersedes anything else. You have to show up every day and do the work. You DO NOT need to punish yourself every day, or even every week, but you HAVE to show up and DO.

The Ultimate Biohack - Hard Work (Quicky Episode)
Tuesday Feb 02, 2021
Tuesday Feb 02, 2021
Hey monkiis,
I was listening to another podcast while walking to work the other day and when the host referred to someone as a 'biohacker' it conjured a really negative reaction from me. It was the first time I had this response to hearing that term and I wanted to explore why. I believe the root cause is that the term 'biohack', 'biohacker', 'biohacking' implies a shortcut to something that would otherwise require hard work. As I have grown older and maybe the slightest bit wiser the more I believe that there are no shortcuts - you just have to do the work.
I did some analysis and came up with 5 elements that are a part of proper hard work:
- Consistency - Do you have the discipline to be consistent?
- Planning - Hard also needs to be smart. Is your training hard enough and smart enough that you adapt and grow?
- Purpose - Do you believe yourself? Do your actions have meaning to you specifically?
- Intention - Are you committed? Are you playing the long game?
- Evaluation - We need to measure positive progress which can be subjective as well as objective. How do you feel? Are you getting better? Are you in pain?
What do you think?

Hey monkiis,
It's been a mild winter here in Colorado, but when a snow event came through this past Monday it felt like we were suddenly at war with the snow. I was walking to work through maybe 1-inch of new snow and was totally fascinated by the amount of energy being put forth to combat the frozen precipitation. A large, tractor-like contraption with a giant brush attached to its front was novel sight and I couldn't wonder about both the economic and environmental (there was salt everywhere) impact of a single-inch of snowfall.
This led me to investigate a concept I'd heard of a few years back, but needed a refresher. Friluftsliv is a Scandinavian word that translates literally as 'open-air living' or 'fresh-air life'. But the deeper meaning is that of fully embracing an outdoor-centric lifestyle no matter what the weather or season may be. I've always felt a sort of collective, societal battle against "bad weather" and couldn't help but to question why. Maybe if we just shift our collective mindset towards inclimate weather we could take another small towards a Wilder state of being.
What do you think?

New Study says...Bull$#!& (Quicky Episode)
Friday Jan 22, 2021
Friday Jan 22, 2021
Hey monkiis,
I've been working on the Body Hardening Manual for the Stoic Kicstarter. It's been a really fun project and I'm stoked to get it out there. Through my research, I've noticed some disturbing trends in the manner in which scientific studies are being reported - whether it be bloggers, magazines, or 'the media'. I found a very drastic dichotomy between how a study talking about the effect of cold showers on health and work was being represented and cited as evidence for improved immune function when the study itself makes no such claim. Now, I am a BIG FAN of cold showers, I actually took one this morning, BUT, I think it is important to examine the data and make sure the nuances of extraordinary claims are understood. My intention is NOT to knock on cold showers as they are a keep pillar to the Body Hardening Manual, it's just that I happen to be doing research that re-exposed this tendency of 'the media' to misinterpret and/or misrepresent a scientific paper.
How many times have you seen a news article with a title like, "New Study Shows _________ Will Make You ________ in Only ______ Minutes". C'mon...we're better than that.
The goal of this episode is simply to make you the listener as well as myself aware so that we can make better decisions and consider being a bit more cognizant of what inputs we let into our consciousness.

Hey monkiis,
I'd like to welcome my good friend and Wildman Michael Butts (@lifewithadventureco) back to the show. Michael and have known each other since 2013 and have since traveled and adventured all over the Western US while also doing a ton in the mountains that make up our backyard here in Colorado. Michael is a deep thinker when it comes to all things fitness, health and wellness related and I always enjoy our conversations on these topics. He has climbed big walls, ran ultra marathons, won several regional and state-level Crossfit competitions, completed several 100-mile bike rides, traveled the world for a decade, competed as a Division 1 college Wrestler, and much, much more.
Michael recently started his own training business Adventure Cross Training (AXT) and I'd highly recommend any monkii that is specifically focused on training for outdoor sports reach out to him.

Hey monkiis,
I was writing out a training program for myself and made up a really useful template on the spot that I wanted to share with the monkii family. Basically, I started with three high-level categories: Goals, Principles, and 2021 Events and then reverse-engineered a path to how I would train in congruence with those three categories. My BIG 3 plans for 2021 are 1) a mountain trail run somewhere between 30 and 50 miles, 2) Climbing a Big Wall in Yosemite National Park, and 3) Backcountry Bow Hunting in September.
What is so fun above setting these huge goals is that you end up doing a bunch of other fun adventures and challenges in order to help 'train' for the big boys. I wrote out a 5-week training block that is mainly focused on General Physical Preparedness, but that also includes some targeted training for the One-Arm Pullup and One-Arm Pushup. I'll do some evaluation and a few fitness tests at the end and then set off on a new journey in 5-weeks.
I'd highly recommend giving this process a shot and please let me know how it goes.
As promised, check out the Wildman David Goggins Instagram.
